Beginner’s questions

I've never played an instrument before. Can I still take banjo lessons??

Absolutely. Our private banjo lessons are designed for absolute beginners as well as more experienced players. We start from the very beginning—holding the banjo correctly, tuning it, and playing your first notes. There is no prior musical experience required, and we move at a pace that feels completely comfortable for you.

What style of banjo playing will I learn?

We tailor the lessons to your musical interests. You can explore classic bluegrass styles with traditional three-finger rolls, learn the melodic fingerpicking of old-time folk, or even strum along to popular songs. Your instructor will introduce you to different techniques and help you find the style that excites you the most.

Do I need to buy a banjo before my first lesson?

While we recommend having your own instrument for practice, we can guide you on what to look for when purchasing or renting a banjo. If you're unsure, you're welcome to attend your first lesson and discuss options with your instructor—they can advise you on quality, size, and budget so you make the right choice.

How long will it take before I can play a full song?

That depends on your practice routine and personal goals, but many beginners are able to play simple songs within just a few weeks. With consistent practice and the one-on-one attention you'll receive, you'll be surprised at how quickly you progress. We celebrate every small victory along the way.

Will I learn to read music, or do I need to know music theory?

Not at all—unless you want to! Many banjo players learn by ear, using chord charts, tablature (banjo tab), or visual demonstrations from their instructor. We can incorporate as much or as little music theory as you like. Our focus is on making the learning process enjoyable and accessible, so you can start making music from day one.
